Adult Training

The Club is an approved RYA Training Centre, an RYA British Youth Sailing Recognised Club and was winner of the prestigous RYA Club of the Year award in 2013. welcome all abilities to join our Club and endeavour to provide the courses that members’ request:

  • RYA Level 1 – For complete beginners. Learn how to sail in all directions and about awareness of launching and recovery.
  • RYA Level 2 – Basic skills. Build confidence and gain the skills needed to sail and make decisions in good conditions.

For experienced sailors, in the winter there is class specific race training on Saturday mornings organised by Class Captains. See the calendar.

We also provide the following courses in powerboat handling and training, as well as in spinnaker handling, racing and race officer.

  • RYA Level 2 powerboat/safety boat. Powerboat handling, the use of safety equipment, and recovery techniques. To promote a good standard of safety boat cover for our sailing.
  • RYA Instructor and Assistant Instructor courses. We sponsor suitably qualified members to become RYA Instructors, who then contribute to our training and coaching courses at Papercourt.

Our qualified Instructors are volunteer Club members who give their time for the benefit of fellow members. Members must be age 16+ and should email training@papercourt-sc.org.uk to book on any of the courses. For information about our current courses click here.

Our 2024 training programme currently comprises:

For Complete Beginners
RYA Level One and Two – Spring Course #1 – Wednesday evenings (8-10pm) and Saturday mornings (9-12.30) from 10th April to Saturday 8th June.  Cost £135 to include boat hire, course books and instruction.
RYA Level One – 29th and 30th May – Two full days during the May half term week – 29th and 30th May (9.30 – 5pm)- £60 to include boat hire, course books and instruction.
RYA Level One and Two – Spring Course #2 – Wednesday evenings (8-10pm) and Saturday mornings(9-12.30) from 19th June to Saturday 17th August.  Cost £135 to include boat hire, course books and instruction.
RYA Level One and Two – Summer Course – 29th July to 2nd August – A full five day course.  Cost £150 to include boat hire, course books and instruction. 9.30 – 5pm
RYA Level One – Two days during the last week of August dates to be confirmed. – £60 to include boat hire, course books and instruction.
RYA Level 2 Course – Dates to be confirmed in September and October – Five Wednesday evenings and Five Saturday mornings to cover RYA Level 2 – Cost £75 to include boat hire and instruction.

Adult Sailing Development Courses for those with RYA Level 2 and above
Get Back in your Boats/Start to Race morning #1 Saturday 6th April 9am -12.30 – Free morning for adults to remember what you forgot over the winter, and look at how racing works at Papercourt.  Free but boat hire NOT included
Start to Race Morning #2Saturday 15th June 9am-12.30pm – A free morning for members to come and improve their sailing/racing skills, and learn how the races work at Papercourt – Free but boat hire NOT included.
Start to Race Morning #3 – Saturday 24th August 9am – 12.30 – A free morning for members to come and improve their sailing/racing skills, and learn how the races work at Papercourt – Free but boat hire NOT included.
Adult Sailing Develpment#1 – 29th and 30th May – Individual or small group instruction to develop your sailing skills and take you up a notch.  £40 but Boat Hire not included. 2 full days 9.30-5pm
Adult Sailing Development#2 – As above, but 5 Monday evenings in May and June (dates to be confirmed).  Cost £50 but Boat Hire not included.
Adult Sailing Development#3 – Subject to Demand – Two days during the last week of August (dates to be confirmed) £40 Boat hire NOT included.

Other Training Courses
RYA Level 2 Power Boat Courses – One course  will be run during the Autumn/Winter of 2024/2025 for members wishing to become powerboat drivers at the club.  Dates to be confirmed  Other courses may be added subject to demand
Instructor Training – The club runs Assistant Instructor and Dinghy Instructor courses by invitation.
